Re: decorative buttons and a few nice finds

Brilliant finds! Love a decorated button and you have some really cool ones there. Plus a bonus hammered! We’ve had ok weather here this week but the cows are guarding the entrance to the harvested maize field which is quite productive. Subsequently I’m left dodging the cow pats on the pasture tryin...

Re: What type of oyster shell?

There’s loads of fossilised ones near me, but it seems there would have been a tropical lake back a few million years ago. They don’t look like yours though! Didn’t they farm them in fish ponds back in the Roman times?

Re: Couple o' bits o' Silver....!

Couple of bits - you have another triple set. If you weren’t such a nice guy I’d start to dislike you by now

Great coins, I can even admire that Roman! I’ll watch the video tomorrow with a nice cup of tea :D

Bending coins - history of the custom

‘The English custom’ of bending coins goes back a long way and has adapted and changed over time. Knowing more about why coins were bent in half, or why a sixpence was bent into an ‘S’ shape can change how we look at what we have found. Personally I get upset when I see people straightening delibera...

Re: Want to win this? Only special prizes here!

I’m not one of these modern men, so not sure if I’m comfortable drinking from a cup with dicks on it, even if it does arms and wings on it….. Caligula has a lot to answer for :D Still, I’m sure the wife would appreciate it  Drinking from it is meant to bring you luck… It would make a good...

Re: A hammy and some Romans today

I think it is a buckle. This one isn't the same but gives you an idea of what family of buckles it could be part of https://www.catawiki.com/en/l/21257903-ancient-roman-legionary-bronze-belt-buckle-with-hinge-plate-8-1cm I'll look in my Roman buckle book tomorrow - well actually it's Roman military ...

Re: A hammy and some Romans today

That brooch looks like it’s trying to be a buckle too! Not seen anything like that before and am interested in what ID it turns out to be

Love the shortcross :Star:

Want to win this? Only special prizes here!

Bonjour lovely Hub friends. We never did a prize draw for our first birthday which we’ve been feeling guilty about so when I spotted the opportunity to order one of these very hard to buy Roman cups I grasped it as a present that the majority of you would appreciate. For those of you who don’t under...

Identifying Sceats

Never found a sceat but I’d love to. In the meantime I like researching them cause they are so intricate and beautifully designed, with lots of hidden meanings. At a basic level sceats fall into 2 main categories: Primary & Intermediate series c. 680 - 710 AD - types A-F, and the Secondary series C ...
