my feet which are full of metal,
You could always notch out your feet

I used to run a T2 which is similar in design (S shape and control/handle position) to your new shaft but I can't recall the T2 coil being that much further from my feet. But it did have the best arm-cup design and function.
I've thought of that, but they give a very good signal, I'd be notching out a lot of good stuff!

I have the stem on my deus a good six inches shorter than the stem on the nox, and I never get a tone from my feet, but with the nox I often get one at the end of my swing and I cant have it any longer as it will then hurt my back.

I can tolerate it currently but if I put a bigger coil on it will be more of a problem so the odd looking shaft will be ordered first.

That is odd getting a tone at the end of your swing when the coil is the furthest away from your (metal) feet, perhaps there is another reason? I suspect that your back will likely not like the extra weight of the S-stem. Which stem do you currently have on your Nox?

I'm right handed, so at the right hand end of my swing the coil is plenty far away, but it sweeps in an arc, so at the left hand end of my swing it can be fairly close to my left foot due to the stem then being across the front of my body. I have tried shortening the swing so that I don't sweep so wide that way, and also timing it with my steps so that the coil gets there at a different time to that foot, but the wide sweep is muscle memory and I lapse back into it and trying to time my steps is like trying to pat my head and rub my belly at the same time, it's quite hard to do without really concentrating!

I have a standard stem on it currently so the s stem won't add much weight, and it will help the balance so I think it will be an improvement due to the stem being shorter and starting from a point level with the top of my hand rather than an inch or two below it.

Maybe I detect weirdly, never really thought about it until now, but that's what has worked with every other machine and I think if I use that stem I can just detect normally, rather than having to relearn everything only for when I use the nox, at the moment it's a minor irritation, when I stick the 15 inch detech coil on it will be more of a problem.

It's not currently something that will stop me using the machine, but it is something that makes it slightly less pleasurable and comfortable to use, the S Stem should fix it, but if it doesn't it'll still be easier to pack the machine down to fit in my car so won't be a waste of money, but I only have this problem with the nox, not the deus or explorer and they both have s stems, the deus also has a couple of inches advantage as the stem attaches at the back of the coil rather than the centre so that pushes it away from me a bit, but the explorer is an improvement over the nox even though the stem attaches at the centre of the coil and it also has a bigger coil on it currently as I have the 13 inch ultimate coil for that one.

I really hope you find a good solution. I wonder if the signal at the end of the swing is actually just the headphone delay as the coil passes your foot.

It's a pity you can't pop the Nox control box on the Deus stem and see if it works before spending money.

Good luck.

There is two reasons which can often contribute to end of swing blipping. One is the coil is being lifted in an upwards arc causing the GB to be affected, and the other is the sensitivities a bit too high. Making sure the detecting height is pretty even across right to the end stop of the swing can help stop it or ,turning the sensitivity down can also reduce the blipping . There is a reason for it, it`s just doing a bit of trial & error testing to find it.

It's bleeping because it's too close to my foot, I know this because I can see it.

The swing is in a radius from my right shoulder, the coil is closest to me at the end of the sweep,

Have to say that S stem just looks plain strange on the equinox although I understand the design constraints mentioned...

Not having metal pins in my feet nor steel toe caps, I have no issues with the straight stem, and never felt that the machine was noticeably unbalanced, but have never used a machine with an S shaped shaft, so maybe I am missing out...

Getting back to the aftermarket carbon shafts for the equinox, I could never understand why somebody did not design one the shaft below the handle angled forward so it pushes the coil away from the feet a few inches?

That would also work for me, and you could add a bend to the standard shaft but the carbon ones are telescopic.

I could stick a pipe bending spring in the standard shaft and bend it but I think that would weaken it as its thin ally.

Looking at the Knox now, would there be enough room to locate the bend above the top joint but below where the handle is attached? You would have to make the bend such that it is far enough away from the joint so it would not interfer with the mid section tube slotting in...

Once you had the bend in place, I bet you could strengthen the inside of the tube with a bit of JB Weld mixed with fibre glass mat or similar..It would add a couple of ounces of weight, but nothing much...

If ML would sell just the top section of the shaft at a reasonable price, it might be worth having a go...I bet it would only need a 30 degree bend or so?

The only problem is you still end up with a longer shaft although not quite as long as just holding the coil further out. The benefit of an S bend is it doesn't change the length of the shaft because the handle is parallel to the ground. It just becomes the difference between the shaft coming from the back of the handle (straight shaft) and the front of the handle( S shaft) - the below handle length remains the same.

If you do go for a single bend in the shaft then some simple trigonometry will give you the bend angle - just decide how far forward you want the coil

Just had a look at mine and there isn't enough room to bend the tube below the handle and above the joint. It would have to be in the next section down which wouldn't be ideal., and a new mid section is ~£30

I pinched the attached picture off of detectorprospetor.com - the chap used the bottom two sections of an Xterra + some mods.

I thin there's various ways it could be done, I'm just going to buy one though, if it doesn't solve the issue I will still have a shaft that packs down easier. Cheers for the suggestions though, that looks a nice job of the one with the xterra shaft.
