I grabbed another few hours this afternoon, hoping that yesterday's hammered coin on the new(ish) field would be an indication of more to come. Obviously I wasn't surprised when that didn't happen!

I found 14 buttons ( :x ) a lovely crotal bell (drilled loop, complete and ringing sweetly :) ), two grots, a manky sestertius, and this intriguing thing. It looks almost like a baby's dummy, but I doubt they made those from bronze :problem:

Roman is a possibility, I suppose, but I'm thinking more toward medieval? In all honesty though, I have no idea at all what it might be.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

It looks interesting but I think a few more pics may give a better perspective?

Could it be an oval drawer, cupboard knob that’s been squashed a bit ?

I’m intrigued. It really would be worth posting more photos, if you don’t mind, cause I’d like to know what it is too

Yes I really don’t like Roman coins, I’m not joking

I don't think it's squashed. It appears that have been cast into the shape.

I'll post a few more pics in a minute.

Cor, what a great find

The thing's shouting Roman to me. Could be something like a linch pin? Or rein guide?

Thanks figgis

You are spot, on. My old FLO has just this minute confirmed that it's a Roman skirted terret ring, so that's made my day :)

Thanks. I think I'd better get back over there this afternoon! The field will be drilled very soon, then it'll be game over for that one until next year.
