Well, I suppose it was and therein lies the trap. Think for once.

It is all about control which will eventually see the end of the hobby. The more evidence they can glean from naïve detectorists looking for a pat on the head from a FLO the easier it will be for them to make a law banning the hobby. Just ask yourself if the low grade MPs sitting in Parliament will be on 'our side' or the 'authorities' should it come to a vote?

No doubt the inquiry into archaeology and metal detecting carried out under the auspices of the All Parliamentary Archaeological Group was most likely a dry run to test the waters for any potential archaeological restrictions on the hobby in years to come.

All it takes is for a new piece of heritage legislation brought before Parliament to which restrictions on the hobby will be added during committee stages of the Bill. Naming no names i can guess who will be the lead advocate.

Spot on. The naïve are busy digging their own grave because sooner or later a law will be passed to kill off the hobby. Not 'paranoia'... it's simply how 'Big Brother' works.

I had a better look around the new PAS site now it is back online. For me 'My Recorded Finds' is still missing from the left hand menu, but if I search for my item it shows it's exact grid ref and find spot on map. As a test on another device I looked up the same item when not logged in to PAS and it just showed just the parish name and outline of the parish, rather than the old 1km square ref. The previous advanced search features seem to have gone, and the search filtering is a right PITA to use as each filter setting is so slow that life is just too short to bother using it. Even after clearing cache the pages are taking up to 10 second to load. Not sure if it loads any quicker with faster internet or if the throttle is just PAS? How is it for you?

Gawd the layers of security to see your own finds is a bit OTT.

Looks like they are still migrating info across as not all my records are yet uploaded. Interestingly I have some treasure items missing still but I can now see unpublished (officially called ‘embargoed’) cases which we could never have sight of before.

There are a number of glitches, including the ‘nearby finds’ definitely not being nearby. Every day there are changes though so it’ll be interesting to see how it improves in the next few weeks. It certainly hasn’t been officially launched yet (even the NCMD are notably quiet about it) so I suspect we’re seeing a work in progress, not the final thing.

One thing I’m worried about though is the official treasure.tracking we were promised. The architecture shows no sign of it being included right now. I hope they don’t quietly drop that or they’ll never take accountability for the speed of the process…

Trouble is, one click their end and they can see what colour underwear you have got on.

Mine seems to now to be mostly working ok..The only minor issue I still have is that the photos for a handful of My Records have disappeared...
