I have used both folding spades and the small cheap ones from Toolstation etc but both failed within six Months on our hard compacted flint fields!!
I eventually bought a Spear and Jackson stainless steel border spade and cut it down to a point and welded on a foot plate. Have been using this spade for ten years now and I can highly recommend them. It gets a hell of a lot of grief!

Nice. This is something I need to get sorted as I will be working on a lot of pasture this time round instead of arable only where I used a short black ada. I have a roughneck but nothing with a cutting edge for roots etc.

Dave
Hi ide like to suggest a Wilkinson sward spade they are easy to shorten and tough, i have also made the blade smaller with a angle grinder. I think this type could be made as short as 500mm. I also want to show my spade hanger ,if the hook is located adjacent to your heart the spade is surprisingly well behaved and I have run across fields without holding the spade without any problems.

This morning my plan was detecting. However I'm now sulking as I cannot find my spade! My garage is full of crap...I can't see it! I thought it was in my car...no,it's not! Mrs says I probably left it last time I was out which was ages ago and it would have been on a grass verge while taking the wellies off...so if that's the case it's long gone.
I might just use some more swear words to see if it reveals its whereabouts.

Always best to have a spare spade about!
After breaking out the wallet and the angle grinder MK11 Dirt Burgler is now ready for duties!

I hope it serves you well. The hole by the fixing to the handle would worry me a bit though
Yes I really don’t like Roman coins, I’m not joking
