Yep, I did that for decades, but a pointer just makes it so much easier to find the target, extract it and get on to the next one.

Well yay and nay, but it keeps just the OP's request at the top for a bit longer!

Using a pinpointer just saves so much time compared to faffing about with random handfuls. I've owned a few and rate the carrot, MI-6, and Nokta Accupointer as the best. The ML ones were just awful in almost every respect.

I have so many pinpointers in the back of my car that I have taken to giving them away at the slightest opportunity.

Most 'real' pinpointers function OK but there are some practical things to consider.

Personally I detect with my pinp[ointer upright in my finds pouch and using it has to be a simple and quick one handed operation. Over the years I've tried many different makes but I've found that most of them are too chunky to fit comfortably in my hand and buttons are wrongly positioned or require too log a press for easy one handed operation. Try as I may I always return to the Garrett carrot.

What I think is rubbish is the warranty on a Garrett. My first failed in a couple of months and was replaced no problem. The new one only gets the balance of the remaining warranty of the original. So if you only got a couple of months or whatever left that's what you get...

Surely that's no less warranty than you would have had if the original probe had lasted?

I detect so often in a quite aggressive environment (beaches) that a carrot which lasts a year of constant use by me is actually doing pretty well. Some of them don't even make it that far before they're murdered or lost.

This is a conundrum as the second item is brand new which should get a new,full warranty. It could be interpreted as "yeah,they're a bit rubbish and it's costing us a fortune to keep giving these away".

I've only ever replaced one on warranty. I had the last one a couple of years before I wore through the hard plastic tip and seawater got in before I realised what I'd done. I now use the protector sleeves to try and avoid a similar mishap but no doubt I'll find some other novel way to do in the current one.

My first carrot never seemed quite right but after a few months the issue escalated to unusable. It was replaced under warranty and its replacement was pretty awesome and never faltered. The carrot let's you know when the battery needs replacing by randomly sounding off when in use, so best to always carry a spare battery. I've been trying out a Nokta Accupointer for the last few months and prefer that it is not only rechargeable but has a battery level indicator, so no chance of getting caught out with a dead battery. It has many other features which I have tried but don't need or use. Though like the carrot I simply use it vibrate only - simples!

After 40+ years I am packing it in and selling my stuff. I put this Minelab Pro Find 35 on ebay only to find it had a hairline crack in the probe end. I hadn't noticed that before and it has never affected its performance, I don't work underwater, it works perfectly. If you want to make me an offer on it?
