I'm sure that Fossils were created in less time than some of us have waited for coils :o Nontheless, the odd small coil has reached a few shelves.

A lot of the primary coastal sites I frequent, can only be hunted successfully with coils of not more than 9". The d2 I have has been in full use in these places for a long time now & very successfully. The only thing I wished for there, was an elliptical one like the HF D1 coil. Who knows if that will come about? Nope

Luckily, the Manti coil is exactly that with blunt ends. Its about the right proportions to cover ground if needed without much hindrance (unlike the tiny 6" Eq type coil) but easily enough to weedle your way amongst multiple targets. Depth, that overrated over talked about subject, is not important.

I used the new coil in the spot that had appeared after the recent storms right at the bottom of the sea wall where most damage to coasts can bee seen easily. I know this spot well having been there a lot over the years. The area is heavily covered with all manner of large ironwork typical from prom wall over the last 150 years. Its big stuff, bars, rebar, railings & pieces of plate plus other chunky bits.

In the past, prior to the D2, I used the ML800 with the coiltek 10x5 a lot in places like this - a really, really, good combination. Recommend that coil without any hesitation, its worth every penny if you have a need for these types of coil.

Initially, I was absolutely battered by the audio responses little coil or not. The 'normal' settings for average beach work were way off, even with a few alterations I made at home. The Manti is a spitting bellowing creature unlike the Equinox - certainly in these unusual conditions. I spent a good 15 minutes fiddling around getting the settings how I wanted them. Basically, to try and nullify some of the heavy iron ear bashing so I could pick through for coins etc. This was done by first altering the Beach Gen Recovery to 6 (fast enough for me to 'paint' the area) I blocked out the first 8 positive numbers and the last highest 2 digits, Ferrous levels were 8 and 4, sens to 18. My audio preferences from Normal with an emphasis on increased pitch for target regions falling in the coinage zone. As long as I could easily detect a new 5p, that was enough. Non‑ferrous objects with nearby iron junk can also create an unusually shaped Target Trace which is helpful. But, such is the quantity of responses, its completely impractical to use anything other than your ear - the best discriminator.

Where the clay base started showing on the surface, much smaller targets where easily found as I cleared the iron to give a better work area. Normally, there is around 8" of material above the clay along with more iron than you can imagine. A cleared spot in photo shows clay base after I moved the iron finding a good number of targets underneath. The coil was perfect in this spot as long as you go back and forth & round and round..

1 shilling, a st christopher, and a ring bezel, all of silver plus a number of scrap coins from the small area. A visible lead petrol pump is interesting. Another spot that wants completely pulling out - plenty more stuff underneath all that iron. Maybe one day we'll have a concentric coil for modern machines for these special circumstances. Ah sod the extra expense making these balanced coils ML, XP & others.

What I would like desperately, is a number of defined save program slots on the Manti, to me, its not enough to have a favourite etc etc. I need several slots so more complicated alterations like custom ferrous limits as one example can be done beforehand and permanently saved. Some global settings altered are carried through, but its not enough at all. On the d2, I have three beach programs to cover all the places I go, as well as two field prg and a coin one too which can be quickly altered if necessary at all.

Cheers Stu, great write up. Your settings sound fairly close to what I was using in the busier areas of the beach although I didn't need to change the discrimination, I just relied on my ears even more than usual. I thought that the coverage was quite impressive and the depth seemed ok on the few deep targets there were.

I didn't even know that you couldn't save programmes on the Manti but it's not something that I've had any need for as yet. At least if you can remember the settings that you want to use it's easy enough to programme. I can't wait to get home and give the small coil a proper work out.

Would you have preferred to be using the Deus there?👍

Well Fred, I wasn't bothered about the d2 there at all really. As long as I can supress to a degree the iron clacking madly at either end of the scale. This is easy with the d2, and not much different on Manti once youve been through relevant settings. What is a pain is altering the custom ferrous levels at multiple stages. Better perhaps to have it on std.

On clean parts, yep it does well for its size. I had another pile of crusties from water drain yesterday. Made life easier with so many concentrated targets.

Wait 'till you see my 'new' detector!!!

Is it a pickaxe or mattock, a big bucket and perhaps a wheelbarrow. :D

Interesting opening statement "I'm sure that Fossils were created in less time than some of us have waited for coils". I wonder how many folk have considered how long it took for a jellyfish to fossilise|
