Anyone listening to the archers at moment last week they discovered some Saxon coins and quite an interesting story to follow its has a bit too run on this story line today they were field walking and mentioned metal Detecting and the pas I work on my own and quite often listen to radio 4 might be worth a listen to see where they go with this story line
I will apologise now if it’s rubbish but I’m enjoying it at moment

I listen occasionally (stop for a tea break around that time and avoid BBC news) and did hear the story line, hopefully they will communicate the positive side to detecting.........but it is the BBC......I will leave that one there!

I don't think I'd like to chance it! Do they still play that god awful intro tune? :-?

I don't quite know how this works, but it seems whenever I tune in to R4 (as a change from 5L) either The Archers or Gardeners' Question Time is on  I've no interest in either and am always left wondering if there actually are other programmes broadcast on that channel.

Whenever detecting is brought into the public eye I always view it warily for the effect it can have.

I have never listened to the Archers, but would be nice to know how this story line develops if somebody could please keep us updated.

As for "Whenever detecting is brought into the public eye I always view it warily for the effect it can have."
It only ever seems to have one of two effects.
1) Brings more newbies into the hobby which puts even more pressure on land and makes getting permissions harder. Look how many newbies there were as a result of the Detectorists TV series, like wise after large hoards are found when people think this is the norm.
2) As a result of night hawing it results in more cries for detecting to be banned.

Exactly, Evan  A trifle negative, perhaps, but that's what seems to happen, hence the wariness.

I have radio 4 on when working away in my workshop but it really is just there in the back ground . They do have some very good plays which mostly are quite good especially the period themed ones . The Archers are on everyday but to be honest I couldn't tell you what goes on from one day to the next however I did catch the buried hoard in someones back garden or a field , not entirely sure . The storyline does seem to be favourable at the moment and so far so good but still waiting for a possible cliffhanger to see if they put the hobby in a bad light . They did this a few years ago regarding night hawking which in turn went on to show metal detecting as a negative pastime .
