After a pretty rubbish week I decided to go detecting this afternoon. As usual taxi duties only gave me a couple of hours but the rain showers had just stopped and the grey clouds were swiftly moved on by a brisk wind. As the weather calmed down blue skies returned and I decided my favourite field might be worth a visit.

I decided to chat with the field for a few minutes before switching on my machine. I haven’t done that for a while. Recently I’ve been silent and it didn’t go well. Different approach is worth a go surely?

This pasture field is nick named the buckle field as I’ve had at least 50 from it in the last year. Most are post medieval but it’s thrown a few medieval ones out to. Today It threw me a nice one. A complete post medieval spur (?) one.

The last signal of the day were two parts of a clasp buckle too.

Also found 5 musket balls, now added to the second jar of them from this permission which is also nearly full

Plus a cast harness ring and my first hammered coin in ages. A scruffy lizzie. A three pence?

Enjoyed that session after a run of pretty poor finds. There are a few interesting pieces in the last month, nothing to get that excited about, but I’ll put a separate post about those.

I shall be talking to this field a lot more :D

That buckle is a beauty
It’s better to hold a conversation with the field rather than just talk to it ;)
Always carefully proof-read what you've typed to see if you've any words out.

We had a chat today. It doesn’t like the cows being on it (they rarely are) but it likes horses. Whenever the horses are there you can feel the difference. Not just saying that either, you really can. A flock of wild ducks were there when I arrived too and it seems to like that as well.

Mind you the cows helped me, the grass is wonderfully short :D

Like the buckle, can’t beat a nice decorated buckle

Interesting tactic, did you talk to it as male or female field, scolding or praising the field

Really nice finds.
It's really interesting having so many buckles. It brings the history alive trying to figure out its past uses

Not a problem talking to the field.... But do worry when it answers back

It’s gender neutral :D I never scold it  don’t think that would go down well. We just chat. I moan about the children, it laughs, tells me which way to go and I clear my mind and listen to it murmuring away.

Or maybe I need a therapist?

Talking to yourself out loud is a sign of sanity and makes you smarter, clarifies your thoughts and firms up your decisions
Talking to the field is the same I guess :?:

The only time to worry is if you see people in white coats coming toward you in the field shouting time for your meds

Couple of nice buckles there Cath.
Not sure if i have seen a clasp type one before.
Only ever say " Thank You " for a good item or " quick recovery " if it is rust but found quick.
Cath, looks like you had the 1000th topic, with this one.
Cheers,
Dave.

Been saying that for years

As someone whose habit of talking to hisself has resulted in two cups of tea being brought to me when working alone because the client swore there must be two of us (at least), it may come as no surprise to learn that I rabbit at the field pretty much all the time I'm on it.

Finds rate is pretty good, but maybe that's the field's attempt to get me to shut up :D
