Can anyone actually provide any evidence to show that socks over boots or any spray will stop mud or clay sticking to boots, I really don't think so unless constantly applying!

It still sticks, but it falls off sooner as it doesn't stick as well, the silicone stuff doesn't mix with water so it does last a while.

Never tried socks.

That makes sense but is no great solution.

For starters, just where the hell would you find any socks big enough to fit over your boots? And even if so, once saturated with claggy mud/clay it still doesn't sound much fun at all!

Good point regarding getting socks big enough to go over wellies  Wish my nan was still alive - her knitted jumpers hung off you like a roomy sack and you could get a friend in there with you if of a mind to, so I'm sure a pair of her socks would have gone over wellies no worries. One sock would have done both wellies, probably, so you could have one in the wash while using the other. Mean hopping round the field, mind, but that's preferable to all that mud.

Good tips regarding spraying the boots  I read that spray oil for cooking might work and should be environmentally-friendly.

I now have a vision of a detecting rally cum sack race! Now that would be more fun to watch.

But the field stains may look a bit suspect?

A hobby that is so addictive the weather is something that has to be endured or not, depending on how wet you want to get I guess

As regards to wearing socks over boots, pants on the outside, as there may be an advantage?

I am just asking for a friend

is there any advantage to wearing pants as Backadder43 does :?:

Good grief, what are you lot like?

We start off on the subject of dodgy detecting conditions and end up with the merits or otherwise of wearing undergarments externally.

Its the ones that drool from each end of their mouth as they read about such abominations, as wearing male or female undergarments on the `outside` , that has me worried :?

I cover myself on all bases.. In deepest winter I wear my wife's panties under long johns!
Still think I remember a spray being plugged by detectorists though!
