Would think a magnet test might have helped first?
Edited to add, I can't see that as being a British WW2 hand grenade...looks far too big and the "pattern" on the casing does not look right....obviously some sort of explosive device, and definitely not whale vomit!

I was thinking the same Pete . Take a common 2nd WW Mills grenade . Its about 4" x 2 .3/4" . I`m seeing no resemblance to a Grenade in the picture shown unless, the actual grenade is grossly covered over by the mass of whatever shown. There again if it was a grenade on the lines of a 2nd WW German "potato masher" then that is a larger variety with the Grenade on the end of a Wooden handle for throwing it which would make it larger looking .
