The weight in pic 4 bottom right seemed a bit odd at first having no suspension loop as such but I seem to have stumbled upon it's purpose as a hair braiding weight.

My finds are in storage too but I took these pics a while back. Always happy to find a lead weight especially if is of a different design, wonder what it may have been used for and why it was in a field whether discarded or lost?

 only got back online today on my laptop, good to be back after 2 weeks on my bliddy mobile phone, the pencil picture is a sort of reference to something i read about whorls, in that whatever size the whorl, the central hole {err obviously} are all the same size, so i put them on the pencil to test it out, though a few didnt, the lagers taking over my brain now

Seeing all those spindle whorls reminds me of a dig I did several years ago.

Before the start have a word with a young couple on their first ever dig. They were a bit nervous and obviously had no idea, so I gave them a few suggestions and told them not to worry, and said we had all started out exactly the same with no idea.

Some while after I saw them and went to see how they were getting on. Basically just a few bits of rubbish (they same as I had found!) and "I think this is a stone but it gave a signal". I look (and muttering under my breath as I recognise it), give it good rub and pick up a little twig and punch out the earth in the hole. I explain that its not a stone but lead, and that its a spindle whorl that was used in spinning, more to the point normally they were plain or might have a very simple pattern on them ... while this one had a more ornate pattern (still one of the best I have ever seen) and was a really nice find and that I wish I had done so well. It was amazing watching rather glum faces change so quickly.

Yes, they all tend to be about 8mm from memory, helps to separate whirls from weights maybe?

Always carefully proof-read what you've typed to see if you've any words out.

Great display of your collection.
Like the one with the Fleur de Lys type design top photo.
Only have the one weight which is pretty non descript and a couple of whirls.
Thanks for sharing ,
Dave.
