I started by purposefully not going on the ploughed bit and went round the narrow grass edge. Second hole, about 8” down out popped a harness junction, ring thingy. I was a bit peeved as it had taken quite a bit of digging till I noticed it was decorated! On researching these I’ve found they are normally described as 7-8th century annular brooches like this one. Not convinced on the date if i’m honest!

I decided yesterday that a ploughed field was the way to go. Not really sure why because ploughed fields and I don’t get on well normally. However it’s been done a few months ago and whilst rough it ain’t a mud bath now and is settling nicely. Guessing there’s a few weeks before it’ll be seeded so worth a little check out!

On checking the same hole I got another signal and out popped this (also incomplete) tiny iron annular brooch 1100-1200 like this one.
Other finds included a battered spindle whorl, a big flat lead weight and an Edward VII penny (1910). Plus a tonne of lead.
By then I’d got distracted so I filled my finds pouch with pottery till could carry no more. All medieval (including a floor tile fragment) except for one much earlier piece of coarse grey ware which I think could be iron age.

Enjoyed reading your post and looking at the photos ,Cath.
Have found a couple of the ring thingeys before, no idea what purpose they serve but like the patina..
Any coin that is legible is welcome, even modern ones, at least they are spendable, so would have been very pleased with a 1910 Penny.

Not a bad day, but where's the Roman? 
That "annular brooch" looks to have three distinct areas of wear but maybe that's just the photo?

Looks like a promising field though
Next time you walk into that field:
Detect straight up in line with your entry point for 50 steps, then do a 90 degree turn to your left and continue detecting

I’d say your harness ring thingy is an annular brooch, it seems to be decorated. Is these a tiny hole in it as well?
Always carefully proof-read what you've typed to see if you've any words out.

With all that nice pottery that field just has to be full of good stuff. The decorated ring is interesting and I do like a nice big lead weight.

No that isn’t a hole. Pretty sure now it’s a medieval brooch. There seems to be a slight groove at the bottom of the inner ring

Maybe many would have just slung that iron annular brooch as it's not much of a looker? I think I would have.

They are ugly little things granted. I’ve had a few annular iron buckles from this field so I’ve learnt to spot them now

Dream field with all that pottery . I doubt I would even get to switch my machine on as I would be too busy picking away at those shards .
