I wasn't planning to go detecting again until Monday but the weather brightened up yesterday afternoon so I grabbed another 2 hours on the silver field but this time just randomly wandering about rather than gridding. The recent rain seems to have made the field more noisy, maybe because there is so much ferrous about.
The finds were pretty average but no complaints. To date I must have found about 2 dozen of what appear to be toy train wheels (bottom right) on this and neighbouring fields, but no trains!

The Notts & Derby military badge and general service button cleaned up okay. I had a feeling that the item top middle could be silver even though it didn't have the usual look about it, but it was so I straightened it out.

Hallmarked Birmingham and the date letter though worn appears to be 'i' for 1908. It's makers mark is in gothic script, so was not easy to decipher, but is PC and that of (Peter) Crease & Co who made smoking pipe mounts, which this is.

I was just doing a finds update for my farmer so here's a pic of the silver from the last few visits but about twice that has come off this field in total so far.

Looking good Easy, would like a field with a lot of badges on

I always thought your train wheels were plug holes, might be wrong though

I did too at first but they are identical to some antique toy train wheels, also some still have part of an iron spindle. I think some also have the off-set hole for the connecting driving rod or whatever it's called!

Maybe there was a toy train event?
There could have been some public military event I suppose?
It's a gently sloping field so maybe not ideal for events, but a great place for a picnic with views.

Plenty of nice finds again.
Train wheels could be wanted by a collector, who is missing a wheel or two.
Not seen a Notts and Derby badge before.
More to come no doubt.
Cheers,

I found one of these before but it didn't survive a straightening attempt so was scrapped, I think I'll leave this one as it is. :)
