Went out on a field where I’ve had a few lovely medieval things yesterday. There was a house there and that area is riddled with small iron. Even increasing the silencer to 3 doesn’t stop the ears from getting a constant assault.

Thought I’d just come away with this fragment of what I think us a type 1 soldino like this one https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/75008

I was OK with that and a plain spindle whorl. But then I cleaned up what I thought was a plain strap end and was soon grinning. It’s a tongue shaped complete medieval strap end but not sure if anyone could offer a narrower date or help to decipher it? I’ve turned the writing both ways as I’m not positive which way up it should be. Rather chuffed with this one!

Don’t forget clicking on the photos makes them much bigger and clearer!

That strap end is a great more personal find. It kind of reads a bit like 'David' ? Not sure about the other at all!

I can see that too but it’s quite corroded. I’m wondering now if it’s a buckle plate?

Now, who wouldn't want to find a strap end like that? Mind, I can see why you think it could be a buckle plate, too, but would a buckle plate be decorated both sides? Dunno.

As for the inscription, dunno that either  But one way up(first image) I see perhaps a ligated Dn (Dominus Noster, perhaps) followed by a stop then a "V" which I'm not convinced is a letter so much as decoration but that might be down to corrosion, then an "O" followed by gawd knows.

The other way up (second image) I'm seeing ?IRD/IRO then the decoration then maybe a date, but that's probably my eyes seeing a 6 whereas it's probably swirly decoration possibly repeated on the corroded opposite side.

So in conclusion all I can say is... I dunno. But I do know it's a lovely find

Great strap end, very decorative.
If it does say David, perhaps depicts St David, Welsh origin or even King David, Scottish origin.
Interesting piece, Cath.
Cheers,
Dave.

Thats a very nice little artefact Cath
Try taking a couple of photos of it with an oblique light, should show it off a bit better so we can appreciate it more ( and maybe see what it says  ) .

I’ll try and do a few more photos. I hate the old english text, blooming fools couldn’t spell and were too lazy to write stuff out fully
