Early start on this mornings venture and with only a couple of hours to spare I decided to stick it out on the usual field and once again concentrate on one small area . It has been a bit scant with the finds on this piece of land but I know there is some decent bits to be found and if I had more time I may well have given up on it and tried my luck elsewhere . Better the devil you know and all that , so off again walking on the crusty layer of soil .
The weather was remarkably different , temperature had dropped and a chilly breeze forced me to wear a woolly hat , bit of a change from my last visit , no sunshine this morning . We do need some rain , a good soaking would most likely help with the finds and may bring the fields alive again .
The Sparrowhawks have been hunting along the hedgerows again , no fieldfares this time but a hapless wood pigeon was on the menu and there are plenty of those to go around .
Saw my first House Martin of the year just skimming the fields and soon the Swallows and Swifts will be here and plenty else was going on . Hares and Skylarks as well as a small herd of Deer emerged from the cover of the copse at the lower end of the field , its good to be out .
Off I went on my merry way and as per usual , plenty of scrap and best find to date was an eyes only find , the general service button in pretty good condition minus the shank . It seemed to be the flavour of the day with eyes only , poking out of the soil was a mini heart breaker . What looked to be a full crotal bell turned out to be half of one . At least it wasnt a button .
Time moves fast and it was almost time for me to head back to the car but a decent signal stopped me in my tracks and finally something I dont find very often appeared from beneath to see the light of day again .
I have no idea what Emperor this would be but it looks like a nasty scuff across his face . I am pretty sure I didnt do this with my spade as it was right inside a ball of hard soil so maybe when the field was ploughed or scuffed against some flint , who knows but I am not complaining , finally a good enough find that cheered me up .
Roman coin saves the day

Well done on the Roman, Paul.
Can`t recall you finding one before.
No idea who it is. Is that Silver in the scratch or just the light.
Always good to see a Crotal.
Cheers,
Dave.

That sounds like a very pleasant morning. Well done on the Roman, they're very rare here too!

Good things come to those who wait.

Great id by Mr A and it was Silver.
Just had to look up that Emperor, not heard of him before.
Once again, one persons discovery, adds to lots of peoples knowledge.
Well done,
Dave.

I am very pleased for you Paul. All it takes is one good find to make your day so very pleased you found that coin - and a Roman to boot. Lovely to see another one saved from the plough!

Yes I really don’t like Roman coins, I’m not joking

Been a dry run for me on my last few outings , but not complaining , very lucky to be able to get out . I am not a huge Roman coin fan to be honest but in this instance I could be swayed being silver . I quite like th patina on this coin so may leave cleaning it just in case I knacker it up .

Nice, unusual coin there, KB and I agree that the patination is lovely and in itself unusual (well, it would be for my coins). Well done
