I found this the other day.

My best guess is a book clasp, but I am not confident about that. Any ideas?

Sorry should have put a scale on it. It measures 2 1/2" by 1". Indications of rust on the back of the "pointy" end where it connected to something on the back.

Yes. Its basically flat from "pointy" end to the start of the square hole where it has a bend (to me it looks as if this is as it was made rather than damage).

Are you implying that due to that its not a book clasp?.

Not implying owt, t'was just observing and asking! :D
It's a sizeable clasp and the hole looks to be reinforced. Some more pics could be useful.
