Well this one was a shock, I can tell you!

I finished work an hour early today in order to make a dash to a local field. It's still in stubble, but with the evenings getting shorter it's just nice to get out.

I covered the roman area of the field for a couple of hours and picked up four grots, but nothing else of note. Then the neighbouring farmer's harvesting turned that part of the field into a dust cloud, so I retreated to the other end of the field where the air was more breathable! Unfortunately, that part of the field has no form for much of interest...

I wandered for half an hour or so, with nothing to show for my efforts, when I hit a sweet sounding high conductor. I expected a lump of modern copper/brass, but a thin edge showed itself and I thought it was a jetton, going by the fairly dark colour. Then I removed it from the clod, saw a shield and realised what I'd got!

I knew I couldn't top that, so I detected my way back to the car and headed home very happy

Cracking coin. I would be more than happy with that, find of the year. And worth a fair bit too.

A very nice find.
It's just all to easy to dismiss an area only to later learn of it's rewards. :D

Yes I really don’t like Roman coins, I’m not joking

Hopefully the neighbouring farmer gets a bottle of something nice for forcing you off the Roman area :D
Nice one
Always carefully proof-read what you've typed to see if you've any words out.

Nice one
I definitely wouldn't have found it if he hadn't been harvesting because the part of the field that I retreated to has only produced junk and the odd toasted georgian/vicky copper previously.

I'll be back on the rubbish end of the field tomorrow, but I'm certainly not expecting a repeat of this.

Never seren one of those either, so well done on finding it.
Plenty of detail left and have always liked the double shield design.
Cheers,
Dave.

I went back again yesterday and I was never going to top to CW hammered, but I did get a nice silver coin of a type that I've not found before. A Victoria gothic florin
