God I’m frustrated with land at the moment. I have a permission with two fallow fields (adjacent to one of my best fields) that they only told me about two weeks ago! Then they haven’t had the time to tell me where they are so I can’t go on them even now. And none of the cultivated is harvested yet :pulling hair out:

I have acres of pasture but most is too dry to detect too. In desperation I went on one small bit which tends to be wetter than the rest. I wasn’t expecting much, especially as depth was a real issue. This section is at the edge of the field and is full of big tree roots so hasn’t been ploughed for a long time. Despite this (and probably aided by cattle churning up this section as they enjoy the tree cover) I did find some bits, all at not much depth.

The first surprise was part of a 1300-1600 strap fitting (similar on PAS here ) at about 5cm down.

Next came a pewter lid knob. No idea of age - ideas welcome

Also had a rose farthing pretty much on the surface. Followed by an array of other coins from a 1987 1p, a US 1983 quarter, a Vicki halfpenny and even a George IV penny!

Need the harvest now though - and rain! Plus some time for land owners to get back to me so I can detect on good land. Pretty please  ;) :D
Yes I really don’t like Roman coins, I’m not joking

Well done Cath for getting out,
I called into a farm near Bicester today to drop some electrical certificates off & farmer says oh we cut the barley & disced one of your favourite fields 3 weeks ago but forgot to tell you, it’s had some rain & should be perfect for you,
I thanked him & said see you in a couple of weeks as I’m down in Devon for 2 weeks tomorrow, don’t want to go now :pulling hair out:

At least you found some keepers with a variety of coins.
Those lead alloy knobs can't all be from tobacco jars! :D

I fully sympathise on the hard ground. I took a small hammer and chisel as part of the digging kit this evening, to break the crust in the more challenging areas. My knees creak enough without jumping on the spade to try and get through it!

Not a bad return there, and that strap fitting's a very nice find. Hope you manage to get onto those fields soon!

Well done on getting out Cath.
The strap end piece looks nice.
You have more in that photo of 4 coins, than i have managed in 3 visits this season, yet to find a coin.
Not being a traveller used to give any odd overseas coinage to people going to that country. They could be 25c short of a Dollar.
Cheers,
Dave.
