I was out for an hour last evening. A nice little Irish Edward 1 penny come up, I’ll post that separately. I also had this item come up. Rang in on the Deus at 71, so in the hammered silver range, but also aluminium. Approximately 23mm dia. I can’t see any sign of detail on the face that can be seen. It looks like it was once round. I’ll have a go at straightening it later to see if there anything on the other side.
What do you think?

Could be?

I found a couple on the same field with absolutely nothing on them. I thought they may have been unstruck blanks, but the FLO said that they were just worn completely smooth on both sides.

Well it`s circular, so hopefully it is.
Will have to see how this unfolds.
Cheers,

Yep, it was once a hammered coin, I’m guessing an Elizabeth I, but have no idea.
I’m going to leave it at this, I will not be flattering it completely.

Was going to suggest testing it with lemon juice and foil, but seeing the last pic, no need, I think it is indeed a hammered!

Any more of that sort of thing, sunshine, and you're banned

The odds are that further diagnostics are on the "inside" of the coin which may have been better protected, but given that it seems these coins were often doubled up on purpose, is it worth straightening it to find out?

Love a mystery coin! I can see it has an ‘A’ in the legend. It could be a Charles, a Mary or a James too if that is the obverse?

Either way a hammered is a hammered
Yes I really don’t like Roman coins, I’m not joking
