Well, back from a break in Devon, limping around & at my favourite farm doing an electrical repair in the grain store, done by 1pm so had a few hours in the stubble amongst the volunteer & weed growth, not the best conditions but picking out the patches that I could swing the detector in, amongst the usual rubbishy bits two medieval keepers popped up that I always seem to get here, another annular brooch with the pin still on & another harness pendant with the arms of the de Ferrers on, that’s 5 or 6 of these now I think, the de Ferrers held the earldom of Derby & were the lord of the manor of market end Bicester in the 1200s & these fields belonged to them back then, the gold guilding has worn off leaving just the red enamelling, this design & colours are still used in the arms of Bicester.
Clint

Great finds! Lovely to get an item with a local link too. I’d never heard of the de Ferrers family before so I’ll have a read.

Sorry to hear you are still suffering with your ankle  I thought it would just have been a minor sprain not one you are still hobbling with a week or so later.

Has your farmer not sprayed the weeds yet? One of mine does the same and leaves it till around now on fallow land. I was talking about it to a retired farmer on our village last week, who was horrified - he pointed out the weeds would have already self seeded by now so it should have been done weeks ago. I guess it depends if it’s the wildlife or efficient farming/ reduced use of weedkillers/ making your detectorist happy that should take precedent  ;)
Yes I really don’t like Roman coins, I’m not joking

That is a great harness pendant, Clint.
Still has plenty of enamelling.
Colours would have been so vibrant back in time.
Cheers,
Dave.

Love the colouring that has survived for so long
Hope your ankle/foot repairs quickly and you stop hobbling around, only slows the detecting time

Nice annular collection! And it looks like one is silver too - lucky man :Star:

Were all the pendants found on that one field? what the heck was going on there?!

There was another better silver brooch but that’s now in Oxfordshire museum,
The harness pendants were probably all in one field back then, now it’s two next to each other after hedgerow put in in enclosure times a few hundred years ago, something happened in the field in Medieval times, as these are out of it too?

Cheers Phil
We found a lot of good bits over the years, but also plenty of bugger all on many days out as well,
Dad always said "folk didn't drop good stuff every day, so we won't find stuff every day,
But at least we got out in the fresh air, had a picnic & it's better than going bloody shopping" !
Clint
