I had a couple of hours today on a local stubble field. Normally it would be disked by now, but next year's crop plans (sugar beet) mean that it isn't.

I started with the usual bits of lead and buttons, then an interesting claw shaped pot leg put in an appearance. Other than that a book clasp and a few georgian coppers though, things were pretty uneventful.

It was starting to get dark as I ventured to the small area of the field that produces roman finds and I managed to winkle out three coins. One was a sestertius (pretty poor condition, but very welcome), the second was the usual 3rd/4th Century small bronze, but the last is an unusual one for that field. It's not a size, nor portrait that I've seen before on there. Any thoughts on this one would be appreciated

Two of the pics are now upside down, but I have no idea why!

A bit of Googling suggests Constantius II? That period certainly fits the field.

The symbol on the reverse is evidently a christian one, known as chi-rho. Well, I learned something today :D

That's one of the nicest chi-rho reverses I've seen. Nice and crisp, with the alpha and omega clear

The Salus reverse type was minted for both Magnentius and Decentius (both of whom were strong contenders for Worst Haircut In The Empire) in 352-353.

Thanks both. I'd never heard of Decentius before.

The haircut reminds me of Silvio from The Sopranos

Never seen or come across Chi-rho before.
Very distinctive design.
Cheers,
Dave.
