Thanks for the extra pics, Evan

Very interesting. The holes should be equidistant(ish) from a centreline drawn perpendicular to thecentre of the loop. I'm wondering if that's the result of some apprentice soldering the loop onto the wrong part. Probly got a larraping for it if so!

Then again, maybe I just need more gin :D
I notice the use of the word "holes", with emphasis on the "s".
This item only has a single hole directly opposite the loop, and to me looks as if that was how it was meant to be made, however I noticed the hawking bells on PAS had the two holes. Interesting. Will wait to see if I hear anything from the FLO next week.

Evan, what did you clean it with to make the copper so shiny? Perhaps slightly unusual for a bell to have a vertical seam?

Ah. I fancied I could see another hole which was bunged up. See, I told you I needed more gin :D

Very interesting thread. Always hoping to find one of these! I did find a whistle once that turned out not to be hawking related, but always optimistic.

I have heard from the FLO

I know that some people are not happy with the delayed response (or even lack of) from their FLOs but this is another instance of a good one from Kurt Adams the Gloucestershire and Avon Finds Liaison Officer. I e-mailed him Friday evening and had reply at 11:38 this morning

Although based down at the Bristol City Museum & Art Gallery in "normal times" he frequently attends the (evening) monthly meetings of the CHADS club at Cheltenham in the very north of the county.

This is his response ...

I can’t say with any certainty that I was a hawking bell, we do see small bells used in various aspects of medieval life but there is however no doubt that it is the right size.

So the debate has not been resolved.

On a positive he did not mention Morris Dancers

Always carefully proof-read what you've typed to see if you've any words out.

Surely any bell as such would have a hole large enough to let sound out?
