Made of wood with an iron nail for attachment, and wrapped in silver with a Birmingham hallmark but date letter missing? To me the design looks to be around 1900, but just what was it part of? A decorative something or something more practical?
To some it may kind of look like the face of a gilled serpent in pic but it is not, just the design pattern. :D

Are you sure it's wood and it's not one of these still containing a bit of goth?

 @Jamesie

Could have been the top part of a walking cane where the iron fitting attached it to the main straight stem?
Cool find whatever though

My first thought too but surely it is far too small for that purpose? It's only about 10mm diameter. Though perhaps from a small parasol?

I have a 1920s walking cane (I sometimes need one in winter) that's made of rosewood (with silver inlays, it's really quite lovely) and it's surprisingly thin, rosewood is pretty strong and if it was intended for a lady I could see an even thinner one working fine, mine is around 15mm at the handle end and gets down to 10 or 12 at the thinner end, I'm 13 stone and I haven't snapped it, and people weren't as well fed as me back then!

I also think a cane back then was an accessory and wouldn't have been leant on too heavily, just to steady yourself on rough pavements, I think that kind of accessory is how we ended up with the officer's swagger stick, it's become something carried for the sake of carrying it.

Thats nice.

I really like Jamesey's idea that it should contain a goths finger ... but I think he is wrong.

BA could well be correct. I certainly agree with him about the idea of it being a handle. But I wonder due to it being so delicate could it be the handle from a ladies parasol?.

EDIT: Saffron do read ALL responses before replying to an early post!! Easylife had already thought of this idea.

The hallmark is visible at the bottom of first pic so likely close to the edge of the silver wrap. I'm not so sure that a single nail would really be sufficient to secure a handle, though this type would no doubt be one-piece.

Maybe it was a repair or an update to give the cane/parasol some class?

Well I guess that anything is possible, so you don't think it could be the little finger of a life sized silvered mannequin then? :D

Speaking of parasols, I must have found about two dozen of those spoke hub slider thingies over the last few years. I guess the rest was made all of wood apart from the pins/pivots? Some still had the timber shaft inside. Just like umberellas today, when they break they just get discarded!
