I'm really lazy about getting any new land as long as I still have somewhere to detect, but things have changed, land has been sold for developement and my other land is either finally about done or has metallic greenwaste. So as needs must I finally got my act together and went for a local drive about on the off-chance of gaining new permissions. As I turned into a junction there were some freshly cut grass fields which looked very inviting. I called at the farmhouse opposite but like many it had been sold off separately. We had a good chat and the upside was that they owned a 5 acre pasture field beside the house which I can detect. I called in at another farmhouse but like the first it had been sold off. Again they owned a 4 acre horsefield which they are happy for me to detect. The third one I called at was actually a farmer but they already had someone detecting there, so fair enough. Less than 10 acres gained but still a most welcome result for now anyway. It's been a long time since I had any new land to go at and the last two horsefields I detected produced lots of good stuff including two gold, several hammered, and a silver treasure find. Apparently this one has been a horsefield for over 40 years so at least should mean some degree of activity, if nothing even older? It's always fun to try somewhere new especially if it has not been detected before. I'll still try to get those grass fields as I know that there was Roman activity very close to them, and I now have a contact. Onwards and upwards!

Excellent result! The other plus to smaller paddocks is they are unlikely to be targeted by the various FB pay to detect groups.....

Good for you shy bairns get nowt as they say, I'm rather fortunate as in I've maybe too many permissions but tend to fluctuate between two at the moment. I am quite lucky because we have quite a few landowners frequent my place of work, I try to ask as many as possible it works for me but not all the time

I'll knowingly dig the horseshoes to give to the landowner like most of the finds, fun to dig but likely not much I will be interested to keep.

I am being lazy about getting new land more locally after I’ve moved house. You have inspired me to have a go. Well done and looking forward to seeing what you find

Well done on gaining your new permissions, it always adds to the anticipation to be on a new field. Look forward to reading your reports/finds.

Both of my landowners love to see early horseshoes. Quite a few very old ones turn up on my sites.

A few weeks ago I was out detecting on a new-ish permission that contains a wooded mound where a motte once stood.

I hadn't been there long when two young girls came running towards me squealing with excitement. Turns out the landowners foster a few children on a part-time basis (good on them) and these girls were there for a weekend stay. So I showed them the detector and told them what it was all about and then described how kings, queens and knights in shining armour would once have ridden up to the small castle.

The girls took it in turns using my machine to hunt for lost treasure and when they found a horseshoe (which I told them had definitely come off a brave knight's steed) they were beside themselves. It was a lovely experience and who knows, maybe they'll grow to take in an interest in the hobby too.

That was a lovely picture to conjure up for them with the element of truth. So little of that in kid's education these days.

With the increase of building on green belt land, it might be worth approaching land owners and developers before the footings are dug.
I have had some success with this approach. Unearth history, before it's lost.

When you look at your book again Easy they’ll be another leaf missing… I asked and I got.
Its only a couple of acres but they have friends with a lot more land that might be interested.. Iron Age boundary ditches recorded close by..
