Please let me know your thoughts on this "wire ring thing" with a fine wool binding that probably secures the loop and appears to have been bound with some care by the looks of things. There also appears to be some kind of splint under the binding or the wire loop has been flattened/shaped for the overlap. I did think of removing all the binding to see what was underneath but didn't want to destroy what could be an important artefact? The FLO thought possibly a ring to hang ribbons on?

Initially I thought it was a pauper's finger ring but the size is quite big unless someone had very big fingers so then thought it could be a thumb ring but again I could be miles off.

Is it one of those buttons…. Where material is sewn around the loop?

Not seen one of those button rings before so anything is a contender at this stage.

I see Figgis also thinks the same so will go with that.

Thanks for your input much appreciated.

What metal is it made from? I have found a fair few of these, but they have always been some sort of copper alloy and the metal work is generally in good nick..I should add I have never seen one joined together like this one either...

Rings from Dorset buttons are, as has already been said, solid and don’t have this construction. I think this might be something else?
Yes I really don’t like Roman coins, I’m not joking

But.... maybe someone just made their own out of whatever was to hand? We recycle now and they recycled then! :D

It's good to get different points of view it keeps the grey matter active, perhaps the mystery ring thing carries on for another day?

I wonder if they had different colored bins, but seriously I suppose anything is possible. If only we could go back in time!!!

The ring looks like it is made of iron, is it?

I wonder if it is a part of a ferreting purse net, similar to the one in the picture, what you have is certainly old, ferreting goes back hundreds of years and would have been home made
