We found this in the garden. Does anyone have any idea what it is? Our research indicates it may be some kind of token used instead of money...

Hiya
Strange to see a "1" and "II" on the other side
Maybe an early version of heads and tails?

I think you are right about it being a token of some description, but i'll await the experts to come along and give you a proper ID

Was it a detecting find in your garden?...or a digging/working type find?

I would say by this find you may have an interesting garden to detect in

I do not know but my initial gut feeling is that its not a token, but to me somehow it just "looks wrong" with the "I" on one side and "I I" on the other.

For a silly idea are you able to measure the "I" and the gap between the two "I"s in the "I I" I just wonder if its some kind of fastner and two of them could be put together with the "I" on the one going into the gap betwen the "I I". If so still no idea what it would be used for.

A "heads or tails" token used in pubs to decide who gets the next round in ;)

Probably a post medieval lead token. What size is it?

Many thanks for the responses. I would say it's about 3/4 inch across and is heavy...feels like lead. The I and the II are at an odd angle to one another...doesn't look like a fastening.

In reply to an earlier response I might add that we live opposite a pub which has probably been around for about 200 years or so. Also, our house used to be the village shop, which may or may not be relevant.

All other thoughts very welcome!

I'd say it was a lead gaming piece - as said - for a heads / tails drinking game. I'd also say the 200 year mark isn't too far away either.
