Sunday the so called day of rest although not for me but not that I minded . A new field and permission , one that I had been waiting on for a while from a customer who must have been happy for the works carried out to let me lose on his nice new field . It is in a good historical area and only ten minutes in the car and has never been detected on before . The downside is that the field is grass and the last time I had a wander over to find the location , it was knee high waiting for it to be cut and baled . Finally despite no baling this year it has been cut and I received the good news this afternoon to go on and give it a go not that I needed much prompting .
There was just about enough juice left in the detector , I really should have popped it on charge like I usually do but after the last wet trip out I had stripped the machine down and gave it a good clean and it looked almost as good as new , a quick check and all was well and I only had a few hours which was more than enough .
Weather wise it was glorious for late october , cloudy with a mix of blue sky and sunshine , just about right for a few hours wandering . I have never detected on grassland before other than my own garden so it was a slightly new venture for me but exciting all the same .
Plenty of iron which I guessed and first decent signal was the obligatory button , still it showed promise . I soon got used to wafting the coil over the grass and again , good signals with poor results in the shape of shotgun shells , a rusty coil which sounded good and then it didnt , a conflicting signal which I still dug to satisfy my curiosity but I felt at ease and was enjoying the new surroundings .
First decent find was a worn coin , totally blank , farthing size and another good signal gave up this coin or possibly a local token .

The definition isnt too bad and I was well pleased with finally finding something good .
Another decent find was a fragment of what looks to be part of a plate rim which looks to have some age which was a nice chunky piece to find
so things were looking to be interesting . Plenty of signals , bits of horse shoe , lead blobs etc and some buckle fragments which proves to be very promising .
All too soon the light was beginning to fade , it shows how quick a few hours disappear so it was time again to make my way back to the car and head for home . On my way out and in failing light I got a decent enough signal and dug and fumbled in the semi dark to find I had chanced upon a cut half short cross albeit with a little damage . I couldnt believe it so that rounded off my first dig on the new field and a lucky promising find .
