The trouble is that the norm will be dependent entirely on the technology people are carrying with them, ie smartphone. I don't think many detectorists would be searching in so isolated a place as to not be able to give a six figure grid reference. A normal phone and an OS map would be adequate. If you have a handheld GPS device even better.
If I have a phone on me I switch it off. It interferes sometimes finding it's signals etc.
Hi Mucky,
I think the point of the OP is that W3W can pinpoint you to any location on the planet within a 3-metre square.
We find that smartphones are quite good and adequate for PAS recording. We also have hand-held GPS as a back-up too.
All the equipment we use is accurate to ten-figures.
We've pondered on the "should you have the 'phone on or off" predicadament but our past results show that this is immaterial.

Thanks again for your comment

I think Steve meant it as more of a safety feature incase anyone had a fall whilst out in the field, its accurate enough to help the emergency services locate you...

Thanks for highlighting this Steve  I do worry about John out on his own, but convinced myself that it's part of the risk of him doing what he loves. I will make sure he sets this up before he sets off at the weekend. Thank you

I think if you are detecting on your own make sure you have a phone signal, if not tell people where you are, check in at arranged times and let someone know when you expect to be back
Anything like W3W is handy, simple and straightforward to quote to the emergency services
Better to have it and not need it than not have it and need it

Or it’s “ I’m at the edge of a field called 12 acres by a large oak tree past a five bar gate Near the village of xxxxx”
