I guess that the square hole may better suit that?

I cant seem to locate anything in this condition with the double bird featured
Someone mentioned the Romans were fond of their bird zoomorphics, but i also just read this too
"In Celtic mythology birds were represented as the messengers of the gods"

Being a dagger back then wasn't used for opening letters, then i can imagine putting 2 birds onto a dagger intended to give someone a message

The fact there is some gold guilding also present means this was meant for someone important?

Is this a recent find Saxonannie?

I'm tempted to move this thread into the Identification forum
I know we all know what it is, buit some of our ID folk only check the ID forum (old habits derived from old places) so they may then see this and give an opinion too
Thanks for the enquiry it was found about 2 years ago. Have only just discovered this site so still unsure where to post things so please move it if you think other can help as we have tried to find out about but can find nothing like it anywhere

It would really be worth you contacting your FLO (Finds Liaison Officer) at the museum for their opinion.

To be fair, I've seen them referred to by both spellings

Always carefully proof-read what you've typed to see if you've any words out.
