I snuck out after work for a couple of hours on one of my local permissions. Its a place that should produce decent finds but is plagued by contaminated green waste, lots of scrap iron from various mining efforts, plus a high voltage power line!

Still, I am not one to give up easily and found a corner of a paddock that seemed detectable...

I found a couple of Victoria halfpennies, a couple of really toasted coppers plus a few buttons and more importantly the ground was relatively clean which bodes well for future visits.

About half way through the session I found the item below.

Initially thought it was another copper, but closer inspection revealed enough details for me to realise I had no idea what it was!!

The bust looks like a Virgin Mary looking left to me, but I am far from certain...

The other side has a fancy monogram, but I can’t really say what the letters are ..I should add that I am not even sure the photo is the right way up.

Any help identifying the item would be most appreciated!

Hi Pete,

Never really knew much about tokens before starting starting detecting, but find them quite interesting now. It's the connection to the local area, as you say...

Regards,

Peter
