Found this a while back and was supposed to be going to the FLO but COVID-19 has got in the way! Have searched UKDFD and PAS websites but can’t find anything similar. It appears to have some gilding still visible and has a green patina. Any help on age (and whether it is a buckle or not) would be most appreciated.

Its a very nice find ,but I`m not sure about it being a buckle though . From what I can see in the picture . It just appears semi flatish with a broken hanging loop, more than a buckles half loop.
To me it looks more like a hanging "pendant "of sortss but I might be totally wrong.

I think the notch on the bar which looks as though a pin would sit in it (much like a modern belt buckle) swayed me to thinking it was a buckle of some sort. The fact that I’ve searched it as a buckle and found nothing similar could indicate that you are right and it isn’t a buckle at all!

I’m on the same train of thought as Bors. The head’s facing in the wrong direction for a belt type buckle - all the ones I’ve seen are the right way up when worn - yours would be on the side. So I’d also go with a mount as well.
Looking at it, is it a lion or a monkey?

Nice find

What is the top edge like? The top edge of the 'head' I mean. Is it complete or has it been broken off?
I dunno...there is something it puts me in mind of but I can't just place it.....

Thank you! Was searching strap fittings earlier but there were 16,000 records and hadn’t come to these yet. Will arrange to get it to the FLO when possible.

I’m still not sure what animal it is! Could be either or could be some mythical beast.

No not yet..... it’s taking a team of highly skilled engineers to make them from the most precious of metal...... well that’s what I think I’ve paid for, so they can’t be rushed :rollinglaughing:

The face is remenisant of certain feautures of a Monkey it has to be said when you magnify it closer . The ears which are prominant but yet could still be a Lions. The top lip appears to be moustashed but that could just be the way ,if it is a Lion ,its portrayed. It certaily isn`t your "average" lion s face though.
