I've covered about all possible avenues of research as usual. We are talking about a cottage built 1500's or possibly even earlier in the middle of a field, not by the main track, but still not far from a water source. At the time the fields near the main trackway were pasture so perhaps just a shepherds hut? Even if thatched roof and reclaimed materials I would still expect even a little sign of it's presence to show. The ground is just clean soil with some gravel stones so easy to spot anything else, though overgrown at present. It quite likely would have been be a poor man's abode. There are vast areas of the field in which I have not yet ventured, so it may still turn up!
