I was going down the same route myself with horse bit.tge only thing that kept stopping me is would the hole have been in the middle of the piece and not the bottom.the end ball does look like iron but i dont think is.i have had a strong magnet to the piece and none of it is at all magnetic.its really got me stumped.im sure someone will know

The hole appears to be the vital part of this object.
How about a rather ornate handle for a water pump.
Looking forward to what it gets id`d as,not seen anything like it before.
My be worth sending a photo to your FLO, i assume they share photos between their colleagues to gain an id.

I’ve seen something like this before,,,, can’t put my finger on it though..... may’ve been in France, a fancy shop bell system? I’ll have a look around when I get in from work.

This was what I was thinking - I once saw one attached to a presbytere we stayed in a few years ago in the South of France.
Not quite the same, but it gives an idea.

Thanks for getting back with the pic.i was thinking the same kind of thing but would have to be somehow attatched near the bottom of the bell.it really feels to have so age to it in your hand.
