I am probably being way too over enthusiastic about this piece of pottery, but I found it mudlarking off of Lindisfarne Holy Island yesterday and noticed that it had a handle, so plucked it out of the sludge which is a mudbank.

What do you all think?? Any ideas of what it could be??

The best way to figure out if any pottery is roman or not is to look at the infil ( most roman pottery as a corse grey layer in between the red ( or brown)

There doesn’t appear to be any colour or texture difference. Does there have to be in fill for it to be roman??

No idea, Emily.
What do you think the circumference is based on your piece ? May help to get some more replies, if the diameter is known.
Possibly a piece of modern pipe but could be wrong.
It`s the protruding piece that is the headscratcher.
Cheers,
Dave.

It's a piece of modern pantile. The lug on the back goes over the batten and the hole through the lug if for fixing with a nail
