Was away last week so no real detecting done...After getting back yesterday I was chomping to get out today..
Started on a field I had not detected before and that had just been harvested..First couple of hours produced nothing but green waste.
I decided to change tack, and try another pasture field not too far away..
Almost immediately, I started getting coins, the first being a cartwheel penny and then a two or three well toasted coppers plus a few buttons...
Then I got a nice solid 19 on the Nox and out popped the coin below.
I initially thought it was a Liz 1st, but now I think it’s actually a James 1st???
Ive browsed through my Spinks and I think it’s a six pence but am not entirely sure as the writing on the reverse doesn’t seem to match the writing in the pictures???
If anybody can help, it would be most appreciated,
Regards Peter

Definitely James I. You can see the JACO part of the word Jacob on the top right of the bust side. And I think I can see VI above where I've doodled VI on this photo.....so yes a sixpence. Nice coin well done

Thanks Daz, yes you correct, there is a VI next to the bust...
I confess, I didn't realise the sixpence got that big...I was actually thinking it was more groat size so was surprised when I looked my copy of Spink and the nearest I could find was a sixpence..
Thanks again,
Peter

Lovely coin. The stuart ones are underrated in my opinion. They are beautifully designed and a pleasure to find

Yes I really don’t like Roman coins, I’m not joking

The shillings are even bigger. You'll know when you have one of them.Pete E wrote: ↑Sat Sep 19, 2020 9:15 pm Thanks Daz, yes you correct, there is a VI next to the bust...
