Not as much feedback on the Icons as I expected

Surprised at the lack of feedback on the Icons, a paltry amount from the UK and the rest US and Europe.

I thought a few more you tubers would have wanted to get their subs up with the latest machine i=on show, but very few it seems.

I'm beginning to think, with so many excellent mid priced machines already out and people having already put their hands in their pockets, perhaps the new Icons will be slow growers over time, a bit late to the party and having to work their way into a saturated market.

I think that a decent smattering of YT'ers have been pretty positive about it. Also, it really isn't peak detecting season at the moment, inland anyway, so maybe that's part of the story. A European one is DetectorKing (most of his vids are overdubbed/titled in English). A US one (who reminds me of ScoobyDoo's friend Shaggy  ) is Jeremy 'Paystreak SuperFreak' - he uses the Icon X with the HF2 to good effect in highly mineralised parks around the Pacific northwest, doing direct comparisons with the D2. There's also good old Gary and Calabash, who've done some.

My impression, second hand, of the Icon/X is that it is a very competitive product, with a unique ability to interoperate with Deus 2 accessory coils/phones, as well as the MI6. They've fixed the coil charging dongle annoyances, and probably fixed the RC (dis-)mounting annoyance too. If I didn't already have the Manti as a (ahem!) backup detector, I might get one as a spare/loaner :D

PS I do wonder though, if the market as a whole may have slowed down - economic conditions, and the reality of getting permissions being ever tougher.

PPS I think that the bigger screen and overall lightness/compactness are two other strong selling points

PPPS

Yes, perhaps a wider field of people will try them later in the year when the crops start coming off and the rains return etc.

Gary's Skill School is always my first port of call when I need advice.

When the Manticore came out I recall that another 'of the experts' mentioned unboxed it, tested it and declared that it was unfit for purpose because it was unable to identify iron. :D He has since become quite enthusiastic about the Manti but I think that it illustrates why the opinions of high profile Youtubers are always going to be problematic. Even without direct sponsorship there is an inherent conflict between the time needed to learn to use a detector properly and the need to post articles quickly in order to cash in on the interest in a new machine.

The ICON is being marketed as an entry level machine so even if it's very good people with high end machines are unlikely to 'downgrade' to one. That really only leaves a market amongst beginners and improvers so its likely to take a while for it to build up a reputation and perhaps a following.

It is a minefield with 'experts' looking to get in first. I guess we all have Youtubers we trust and go back to.

All (well almost all) the YouTubers are either talking out their ass and haven’t a clue, or being paid to have an opinion. A biased one.

I no longer care about the opinion of any of them. To be honest I’m not sure I cared much before. Now I have zero interest.

I am always interested in anybody swinging a detector, new or old. However, I have lots of experience and a heap of cynicism so I like to think that I can cut through the BS. I often still find myself giving a running commentary to the screen about all the things that they are doing wrong, both with their setup and their technique. .

Same here. Recently I asked a manufacturer if they'd sponsor a mate of mine. The guy is out detecting almost every day —(basically a Fred clone in the wild, a genuine 100% field tester).

Their first question: "Does he have a YouTube channel?"

I replied: "No, but he's actually outside using the gear instead of filming himself using the gear."

Their answer: "No thanks, we're good at the moment."

Which tells you everything really. These days some YouTubers aren't customers or testers, they're unpaid members of the marketing department who just happen to invoice in free products.

It's a bit like the workers slogging through the Christmas rush, breaking sales records, and getting rewarded with a pizza party... while the boss rolls into January in a brand-new Range Rover and calls it "team success."

I work for a luxury chain of restaurants it is the same.100% thats i m afraid what the world as turn into

I used to watch loads of detecting stuff on YouTube but after a while it gets pretty boring to be honest. I seldom watch any these days but I don’t mind watching a bit of detecting with Jessie now and again!

Helpful if you want to understand a specific detector issue but otherwise it's Tommy Cooper playbacks or naughty pussy cats.

I remember, a lifetime ago, a fellow student asking our lecturer "What's the best way to learn more about this subject?" to which the answer, in a strong lowland Scots' accent, was "Read books and talk to people".

Not much has changed, except that we have new ways to talk to people without being face-to-face (like this forum :) ) and new ways to read, and publish, information. The barriers that existed in publishing/broadcasting (cost, time, editors, legal watchdogs) have been pretty much completely removed. As a result, the economics of publishing/journalism/etc have been completely upended, and some good and bad things have come from that.

As has always been the case, there will be many (including governments, wealthy vested interests, hucksters, honest businesspeople etc. etc.) who seek to further their financial/political agenda. AI is adding a whole new, pretty sinister, dimension to this - YT is not alone in being increasingly filled up with AI "slop" of one kind or another.

More than ever before, we need those critical faculties that allow us to spot the difference between truth (which can sometimes be honestly wrong); lies (dishonestly wrong); and entertainment (who cares as long as it holds my interest and/or makes me laugh - esp. kittens and puppies  ) which implies we need a fair bit of background knowledge/experience/context. I worry that the younger generation, particularly, are not being taught how to be critical/sceptical of the stuff that bombards us all.

Back on topic - it looks as if the new toughened RC mount that comes with the Icon/X is maybe not as bomb-proof as we might have hoped.

Alexa is the most dangerous thing and I won't have it in the house. My son is totally dependent on it and I see his lack of 'thinking for himself' as a direct route towards dementia in later life.

I told Mr. Loubet 3 years ago that he should do something similar to the Quad Lock system. I use one on my motorbike for my phone, and I also have the bracelet version that I wear on my wrist. It's incredibly secure on the bike — even when riding at 80 in a 20 zone, there's no vibration whatsoever.

When I had the D2, I ordered a part that I was planning to somehow stick behind the remote because I was getting so fed up with the fringing attachment dropping off into craters while digging for a 5p coin at 30 cm depth (although maybe that's the Manticore at that depth! 😁😁😁😁).

In the end, I couldn't be bothered, so I sold the whole lot.
